Paving

Asphalt paving is the process of applying a durable and smooth surface made from a mixture of aggregates, binder, and filler. It's a popular choice for driveways, parking lots, and roads due to its affordability, quick installation, and long-lasting performance. The process involves a careful balance of materials, machinery, and expertise to ensure a smooth and long-lasting finished product.

Key Features of Asphalt:

  • Asphalt Binder: A sticky, black, petroleum-based substance that holds the mixture together.

  • Aggregates: Provide strength, stability, and durability to the surface.

Application Process:

  • Preparation: The area is cleared, graded, and leveled to ensure proper drainage and stability.

  • Base Layer: If needed, a base layer of aggregate or gravel is laid down and compacted to create a stable and level foundation for the hot mix asphalt (HMA).

  • Asphalt Application: Hot mix asphalt (HMA) is heated to high temperatures, transported to the site, and spread using specialized paving machines. The mix is applied in layers, typically starting with a thicker base layer and finishing with a smoother top layer.

  • Compaction: Rollers compact the asphalt to eliminate air pockets and ensure a dense, even surface.

Advantages of Asphalt Paving:

  • Durability: Asphalt is resistant to wear and can handle heavy traffic.

  • Flexibility: It can expand and contract with temperature changes, reducing the chance of cracking.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: Asphalt is relatively affordable compared to other materials.

  • Recyclability: Asphalt can be removed, processed, and reused, making it environmentally friendly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to have asphalt installed on my property?

All projects are different. We would need to visit your project site in order to properly assess each project and customize it to fit your needs. Factors may include, grading of the ground, subbase, base, the depth of asphalt and what kind of traffic and usage. A team member would be more than happy to assist you with understanding your needs.

What is an overlay and do you recommend this service instead of paving?

An overlay is where asphalt is laid on top of existing asphalt. The surface must be prepped in order for a proper overlay to be performed. Many times, certain areas must be saw cut, removed and addressed before the surface can receive new asphalt. If your property qualifies for an overlay, this may be a very cost effective service to address your specific needs.

When can I drive on my brand new asphalt?

Speak with your project manager to confirm your project specifications and determine the asphalt cure timeline.
